about

On August 13th 2022 Secluded Bronte made their debut at the excellent Supernormal Festival in Braziers Park, Oxfordshire. The heatwave still had Britain in its unyielding grip and the countryside was scorched and yellow. Secluded Bronte performed in a space known as The Vortex. Architecturally The Vortex is a fairly large wooden building with a sloping roof. Visually it is somewhere between a barn and a chapel.

Outside The Vortex it was 35° Celsius. Inside The Vortex it was considerably warmer. The temperature did not deter the audience and the group played to a full house.

For this occasion Secluded Bronte’s line up was augmented by the filmmaker James Holcombe and guest musicians.

Vocalist Xena Holcombe (aged 10), and the cellist Hugo Holcombe (aged 14) joined the group for their final number about a time traveling outlaw, I’ve Got A Vehicle. James Holcombe projected b&w 16mm films. However, the way the performance was devised was slightly unique in that instead of the group performing simultaneously with film projections, film was instead used as a punctuative device. So, you’d get a suite of music for 6 minutes or so and then 2 minutes of projected film and so on. Each film had it’s own autonomous soundtrack provided by James Holcombe. These soundtracks featured Holcombe’s voice and the sound of various film making mechanisms. The narration was concerned with technological malfunction.

This wasn’t an ordinary Secluded Bronte performance, though there is seldom anything ordinary about any Secluded Bronte performance. Either way, you get the whole thing here, but due to the idiosyncracies of Bandcamp it has been necessary to fragment the live performance into five sections. All that remains to be said is Supernormal is a superb festival and one should attend it the moment the opportunity arises.

Yours,
